BISMARCK, ND (KFYR) – Lynard Lipsky had never played hockey in the United States before signing with the Bismarck Bobcats.
“My parents took me to my first hockey practice. I think I was seven years old. Yes, I was seven. I grew up watching the Latvian national team that played in the KHL,” said Leonards Lipskis.
Lipski was born and raised in Riga, Latvia, and hockey in North America is a variation of the game he grew up playing.
“They came here and it’s a new experience for them. I think that’s the most important thing for them, it’s adaptation. From day one to where he is now, he has emerged as our starter,” said Lynn Sidevi, Bobcats coach. general manager.
He played in 18 games for the Bobcats this winter, but took some time off in December and into the new year. This is because he participated in the World Junior Championship, playing for the Latvian national team.
“It’s such an honor. It’s always great to wear this shirt and represent your country. It is an experience that cannot be replaced. There is nothing like that,” Lipske said.
After years of playing on the world stage, his move to the United States wasn’t for the Bobcats. That was because he was offered to play Division I hockey at Northern Michigan State, which he would start after his stint at Bismarck.
“I loved everything about him. They showed interest and I really appreciated that, and I thought it was a no-brainer,” Lipsky said.
“Commitment is one thing, but I think one of the things you take the most pride in as a coach is getting your friends to come in and play. He has to get better to get in the net and be a starter and continues to be ahead of his time in minor hockey,” Sedevi said.
This progression happens as he plays the game, and he plays the game at a pace he’s never played before.
“A lot of games, which means a lot of experience. I played so many games a season ago, it was almost double what I used to play, so it’s great for my growth,” Lipsky said.
The Lipskis and the Bobcats can be seen in action next this weekend when they host the Aberdeen VFW.
