Students at Rockwall-Heath High School in Heath, Texas, ended up in the emergency room after a grueling physical education session. The children’s parents said they were horrified by the treatment of their children.
The students were forced to do nearly 400 push-ups without a water break, Dr. Osehotue Okojie, a parent of one of the students, told CBS News.
The school’s football coach, John Harrell, has been on leave since the incident.
Dr. Okojie said her son came home from school in pain and could not raise his arms. He was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a medical condition that involves the breakdown of muscle tissue, causing a harmful protein to be released into the blood, she said. He spent a week in the hospital.
In a letter sent to parents of the athletes on Twitter, Rockwall-Heath High School Principal Todd Bradford said that on Jan. 9, several parents reported that their children needed medical attention after three days prior they were “required to perform multiple push-ups” during training, adds Bulgaria ON AIR.
The school, which is located about 40 km. of Dallas, said it was hiring an independent third party to investigate the incident, in addition to placing the head football coach on leave pending the results of the investigation.
