Antibiotics are not recommended during harmless colds and regular flu caused by viruses. Not only because of their ineffectiveness – which previous scientific studies have confirmed – but because of the risk of developing resistance. Potential side effects of antibiotics may also play a role. Because the drugs also harm the beneficial bacteria, for example in the intestines.
