Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev advanced to the 3rd round of singles at the Australian Open Grand Slam tournament. The Melbourne finalist from the years 2022 and 2021 defeated John Millman from home in the 2nd round as the seventh seed 7:5, 6:2, 6:2.
“It was a quality match, much more even than the final result shows. John played excellently, he took my serve twice in the first set. From the beginning of the second set, I tried to get him into longer exchanges in which I had the upper hand,” said the 2021 US Open champion in an interview with former American tennis player Jim Courier. Medvedev’s next opponent will be the American Sebastian Korda, seeded as number 29.
Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal will not defend his men’s singles title at the Australian Open Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne. In the position of seeded unit, he lost in the 2nd round to the American Mackenzie McDonald 4:6, 4:6, 5:7. He finished the match with an injured hip joint.
The beginning of the match did not go well for Nadal, he quickly lost 1:4, and McDonald turned a double break into a win in the first set. McDonald did not hide his satisfaction after winning a valuable scalp. “I started well, everything was going well. I served and returned great. In the third set, however, I started to struggle a bit. Rafa played unpredictable tennis, he is a great champion. It was difficult to play against him, even when he was injured. My plan was of course, I wanted to play aggressively and shoot from all positions,” said the American in a post-match interview.
