Sleep Habits That Turns Out to be a Sign of Dementia, Be Alert

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Symptoms associated with persistent decline in cognitive function are referred to as dementia. This debilitating disease comes in many forms, Lewy body dementia ranks second only to Alzheimer’s disease in terms of prevalence. This is caused by the buildup of Lewy bodies, or protein stores, in the nerve cells in the parts of the brain responsible for thinking, remembering, and moving.

Everyone has a hard time sometimes sleep, either because you can’t sleep or because you wake up in the middle of the night from a bad dream. If your partner or roommate frequently complains that you kick or scream while you’re sound asleep, it could be an indication of dementia.

Why do kicking and screaming occur during sleep? People with dementia may have difficulty interpreting complicated emotions or experiences from previous events due to memory loss or cognitive decline associated with the development of the disease. Because these memories become more evident during sleep phases such as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, when dreams occur most frequently, these people may try to communicate physically rather than verbally.

REM sleep, one of the five stages of sleep, usually begins 90 minutes after falling asleep. Sleep is not as deep as entering REM sleep because brain activity increases again during this stage. The level of activity is similar to when awake. Because of this, REM sleep is when vivid adventures, or even strange dreams occur.

What is the link between sleep and dementia? Although many older people have trouble sleeping, people with dementia often have more trouble sleeping. Up to 25 percent of adults with mild to moderate dementia and 50 percent of people with severe dementia may experience it sleep disorder. As dementia gets worse, sleep difficulties tend to get worse too.

The Mayo Clinic says that Lewy body dementia can lead to behavioral disorder REM sleep, which causes a person to begin vocally and physically act out vivid and often unpleasant dreams. People may act similarly when dreaming, such as chatting loudly in bed or moving around as if they were doing something related to the dream they are currently having. Therefore, these sleeping habits are associated with a possible risk of dementia.
