The big difference between the Greek system and the basic package that France wants to introduce is that the French government does not intend to make up for the price difference. “In France, the government counts on the goodwill of the suppliers,” says labor economist Stijn Baert (UGent). “They want to ask the supermarkets to adjust their prices themselves, without the government compensating them.”
In Greece, on the other hand, the government intervenes. “The government and the supermarkets share the costs of that basic package,” says correspondent Tersago.
