In Gelderland, more than 1.3 million birds were culled last year. This does not seem to affect the poultry sector. “The perspective will not change. Especially open water and a lot of grass are risk areas, otherwise not. And if you are affected, it is a matter of starting over,” says Oplaat. That turns out to be the case. The number of chicken farms in Gelderland has remained fairly stable for years at over 400, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands.
