Miley Cyrus never minces about the lyrics of her songs and here is her new single Flowers no exception. With the song she celebrates her independence as a bachelor, but also seems to be a reaction to the song When I Was Your Man from Bruno Mars. According to fans, she would refer to her ex, actor Liam Hemsworth.
At first glance it seems Flowers an ode to the bachelors among us. But if you listen carefully to the sentences in the chorus, you will immediately recognize the lyrics. The song was clearly written as a response to When I Was Your Man from Bruno Mars. Where Mars sings how he should have done better for his ex, Cyrus sings that she doesn’t need a lover at all.
“I should have bought you flowers and held your hand (I should have bought you flowers and held your hand),” sings Mars.”I can buy myself flowers, I can hold my own hand (I can buy myself flowers and I can hold my own hand)”, Cyrus sings in turn.
And the similarity doesn’t stop there. Because where Mars sings that he should have given his partner all his time and taken her to parties to dance, Cyrus prefers to go alone. “Talk to myself for hours, say things you don’t understand. Disguised message to Liam Hemsworth
Fans of Cyrus claim on Twitter that Flowers goes beyond an answer to Mars. They say the song is a message to Cyrus’ ex-husband Hemsworth. The two had a relationship from 2008 to 2019 that went out several times, but eventually led to marriage. In 2019, the divorce was filed. The actor would When I Was Your Man once dedicated to his ex-wife and that would have given Cyrus the idea to make the lyrics his own.
The release date of the song adds to this rumour. Flowers appeared last Friday, on January 13, Hemsworth’s birthday. It is not the first time that Cyrus sings about this relationship. That’s how she did it in better times with the hit Malibu (2017). Then she sang about the wonderful life on the beach at their home in Malibu.
Two years after Malibu the cards would have been shuffled differently on the hit Midnight Sky. Cyrus had just divorced at the time and was in relationships with Kaitlynn Carter and not long after with singer Cody Simpson. On the song, she sings that she was “stuck” with Hemsworth long enough.
“See my lips on her mouth, everybody’s talking now (see my lips on her mouth, everyone is talking about it)”, she sings about the rumors surrounding her and Carter. She addresses Hemsworth directly with the line: “See his hands round my waist, thought you’d never be replaced (See his hands around my waist, you thought you’d never be replaced).”
Flowers brings Cyrus, who last delivered an album at the end of 2020, to the top of the streaming charts again. Worldwide, she scored almost 11 million streams in the past 24 hours. She passes Shakira, the one with the song Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53 also lashes out at her ex.
