Joe Rodon keeps a clean sheet for Rennes against Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe as Tottenham teammates battle Arsenal

While Tottenham were under attack from Arsenal, Joe Rodon was bagging Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

The Welsh defender, who is spending the season on loan at French side Rennes, helped them to a famous 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.

The centre-back made his first start for the Ligue 1 team since the World Cup, in which Wales exited in the group stage.

Rennes managed to secure all three points through Hamari Traore’s goal in the 65th minute, but Rodon was key to the win, blocking two shots, making five clearances and one interception.

Rodon’s performance was so impressive that he was featured on the cover of Monday’s copy of L’Equipe.

The French sports newspaper also showed Messi and Neymar looking dejected after the surprise defeat.

Rodón’s stellar performance came on the same day that his parent club Tottenham were handily beaten by Arsenal.

Antonio Conte’s side showed plenty of defensive weaknesses during the 2-0 loss, with Arsenal getting the better of them in particular in the first half at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The lack of quality in Spurs’ defense may raise questions as to why Rodon was loaned out in the first place.

Rodon joined Spurs from Swansea City in 2020 on a five-year deal worth an initial £11m plus add-ons.

Having made just ten appearances for the club, he went on loan to Rennes.

The deal includes a purchase option clause, meaning they can opt to make the move permanent for a fee of around £17m at the end of the season.
