London «tows» Scotland, Sunak ready to ban the law on sex reassignment – Corriere.it

Approved a month ago amidst a thousand controversies, the text also contested by Rowling and feminists. Sturgeon: An outrage

Nuclear option to block Scotland’s transgender law: Rishi Sunak’s UK government preparing to resort to a prerogative never used before by London, which allows the central executive to veto a measure approved by the Edinburgh Parliament.

l’extreme reason which Sunak appeals to reject a highly controversial law, by virtue of which in Scotland from now on it will be possible to legally change sex on the basis of a simple self-certification, without the need for a medical opinion, and moreover even if they are minors (over 16 years of age).

The law passed in Scotland last month amidst a thousand controversies: feminist groups have accused the premier Nicola Sturgeon to undermine women’s rights and writer JK Rowling, the creator of Harry Potter, campaigned against the measure, which was eventually approved despite the dissent of several deputies of the ruling Nationalist Party e the resignation of a minister.

Feminists fear that with the new norm they will come places reserved for women put at risk, especially the vulnerable ones: JK Rowling, for example, funded her own money in Edinburgh a shelter for rape victims which only biological women can access.

But now the London government takes the field, which finds on this the solidarity also of the Labor opposition: Labor leader Keir Starmer also expressed doubts about Scottish legislation and did not rule out giving his support to Sunak. Instead Edinburgh premier Sturgeon called it outrageous London’s attitude and accused Sunak of using the transsexual issue as a political weapon.

It is indeed a topic that is inflaming debate in Britain and one that the Conservatives in power use as a tool in the culture wars against the left. For its part, the progressive alignment appears prisoner of political correctness and wrapped up in writhing about what it is to be a woman, whether it’s a biological fact or just feeling one. There was no shortage of attitudes of intolerance, bordering on violence, by the trans lobby against feminist intellectuals.

Sunak intends to block Scots law precisely on the grounds that would be in breach of UK gender equality legislation, which is strictly the responsibility of the central government. But from Edinburgh they will certainly appeal to the legal office and the clash could end up before the Supreme Courtthus foreshadowing an unprecedented constitutional conflict.

a battle which also falls in a particularly delicate moment, after the Supreme Court had always rejected the request of the Edinburgh government to be able to organize a new referendum on the independence of Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon has therefore promised that the next election will effectively be a vote on secession. The secessionist push is now intertwined with the transgender issue, in a potentially disruptive cocktail.
