Supermarket chain Carrefour tests autonomous delivery robot in Zaventem – Image and sound – News

The supermarket chain Carrefour is testing an autonomous delivery robot in Zaventem, Belgium, near Brussels. For this, the company uses a robot from Delivers.AI. Initially, a panel of twenty volunteer testers is used. Carrefour targets city centers with the service.

Of test takes place in an office park in Zaventem, which covers an area of 60,000 square meters. Here are six buildings with a total of 9000 employees. The robot from the Turkish company Delivers.AI has eight cameras and sensors that allow the device to avoid obstacles. In addition, the two companies have mapped out the movement area in advance. The robot has indicator lights for visibility.

During the test, testers can order groceries via Deliveroo at the Carrefour branch in the office park. Ordered groceries are placed by Carrefour employees in a delivery robot, which brings the order back to the customer. Carrefour says the trial will last until the end of this spring. If successful, it will be followed by a trial in a ‘hypercentre’.

Carrefour says that the autonomous delivery robot will make grocery delivery possible in more places. With the service, the company focuses on city centers and in the beginning on large cities such as Brussels, Antwerp, Liège and Ghent. ‘In the long term’, small and medium-sized cities should also be able to be served with delivery robots, says Carrefour.
