Ophthalmic migraine: characteristics, causes and treatment

What are the symptoms of an ophthalmic migraine?

It all starts with visual disturbances more without any headache : sparkling spots in the field of vision, partial loss of vision or even temporary blindness. These visual disturbances are most often called “aura”. As the Inserm explains, visual disturbances are the most common (90% of cases). The aura can last from 5 minutes to 1 hour. Then the headache is coming.

What causes ophthalmic migraines?

Ophthalmic migraine is caused by reduced blood flow to the eye due to narrowing of blood vessels. This is why the symptoms disappear as soon as the blood circulation returns to normal.

This narrowing of the blood vessels can be the consequence of several factors. This may for example be due to:

  • stress or a change in the pace of life;

  • lack of sleep;

  • high blood pressure;

  • hormonal changes;

  • hypoglycemia;

  • to dehydration…
