The US president has asked Congress to approve the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey
The US plans to sell 40 new F-16 fighter jets to Turkey, as well as provide repair and maintenance for 79 F-16 fighters already in Turkey’s arsenal. The amount of this transaction will be 20 billion dollars (18.4 billion euros), reports “The Wall Street Journal”.
The deal must be approved by the US Congress. Officials of President Joe Biden’s administration have said that the parliament’s decision will depend on whether Turkey agrees to the admission of Finland and Sweden to NATO. Ankara has so far been reluctant to give its consent because it wants assurances from Sweden and Finland that they will extradite individuals accused of terrorism to Turkey.
But several influential congressmen may not support the sale of fighter jets to Turkey. This has been opposed by the chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, Democrat Robert Menendez, who points to human rights problems in Turkey.
Under US arms export laws, Congress has 30 days to review the deal. If Congress decides to block the deal, then congressmen will have to express it in a joint resolution.
