Erabaru.net. When Emilia’s son, Rocco, finally marries, she starts hinting at wanting grandchildren. However, he never got his hopes up again after something bad happened.
“You have to take care of the grandson soon, right?” Emilia laughs while patting her son’s cheeks. Rocco rolled his eyes but his new wife, Polly, grinned and nodded at her mother-in-law.
“We’ll talk about it in a moment, ma’am. We just got married,” Rocco said, using his hand to gesture around them. They really were at Rocco and Polly’s wedding.
However, Polly’s parents interrupt. “We also want grandchildren! So, get started. I can’t wait to teach my grandchildren all about soccer!” says Polly’s dad, and Emilia joins him in wishing lots of boys and girls running around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and every other holiday.
Emilia really wants a family. She was raised by a single mother who died years ago and became a single mother. Rocco is his only family in the world, so the thought of having a big family is overwhelming.
“We have to be stable, and then, we will start trying for the children,” Polly replied calming the situation down. Their wedding party continues, and they all have a great time.
But Emilia started knitting little boots and sweaters for her future granddaughter when she returned home. She would make a wonderful grandmother, and their family would never feel small again.
Emilia never expected to lose the feeling of joy she felt right after her son’s wedding to Polly. In fact, the following months were also brilliant. Polly is very nice, and she is happy to have her around all the time. They even talk about babies.
“But Rocco wants to wait for his promotion, and I think that’s a great idea. We have to be a little more financially secure before we have kids,” Polly often told him, but with a smile. Emilia knows that her daughter-in-law wants to be a mother. But she is also a wonderful wife to her son.
“It doesn’t matter. I know the economy isn’t what it used to be, but you’ll find out when the kids come around. And I’m here to help any time with babysitting and such. I mean after work, of course, but I’ll be here for you guys!” the old woman insisted, and they continued to talk about the children.
Rocco doesn’t join in much of the conversation, as he’s still reluctant to start trying, but Emilia is sure her son and wife will be pregnant soon.
He never expected that his dream and his whole world would disappear in a second. It was a rainy night in New Jersey, and his son’s car swerved on the way home, crashing straight into a tree. Luckily, another driver stopped and called 911.
Polly calls Emilia hysterically, and the old lady rushes to get her and drives quickly to the hospital, where they hold hands, waiting to hear news. Unfortunately, the doctors tell them that Rocco’s wounds are too difficult to heal with surgery.
“We did the best we could…” they said.
Emilia closes her eyes to the harsh hospital lights while the echoes of Polly’s cries ring in her ears.
They cried together in the waiting room for a while, but it was less than an hour. Polly’s parents are on their way because they are vacationing elsewhere.
Finally, Polly’s desperate sobbing stops, and she turns to Emilia with a heartbroken grin, much to the confusion of the old woman.
“Why are you crying and smiling, baby?” Emilia wonders, disappointed.
“We’ll tell you this weekend…” Polly began and cleared her throat. “I am pregnant.”
Emilia’s eyebrows raise, and her heart jumps and crashes again. This was her dream – the grandson she had begged for a while. But this is not the way he wanted. Regardless, this moment wasn’t about him.
He lifted his arms and wrapped Polly tightly against his chest. This new widow started crying again and talking about how difficult it was to raise her child without love in her life. But Emilia repeated her promise.
“I will be with you every step of the way. You will never be alone in this world. Your parents will also be here. This baby will be so loved, and we will talk to him about his daddy,” Emilia says, her tears falling hard and fast.
“We’ll get through this.” And they did.
Several months later, Polly gave birth to a boy… Rocco Jr… a baby who was adored by all of his grandparents and Polly’s extended family.
Emilia often marvels at how similar he is to her late son, but he also has a personality of his own. It’s brilliant to look at. Polly is also a great mother, and her parents are solid. They were her family, even years later, when Polly remarried. Her new husband is the best stepfather anyone could have, and Emilia is grateful.
“All I care about is that he is loved, and you deserve to love again, honey,” Emilia told Polly at her second wedding. Of course, he was invited. He was part of them, part of Rocco Jr. and Rocco, who will never be forgotten.
