The defeat during the week in the Eurocup is followed by the next defeat for ratiopharm ulm: Coach Anton Gavel’s team loses 84:91 to the Würzburg Baskets. In the first quarter, the hosts lost out in front of 5,320 spectators.
Gameplay and turning point: Tired against fresh legs – that was probably also the motto of the game between ratiopharm ulm and the Würzburg Baskets. Because while the hosts were challenged in the Eurocup in Venice during the week (and clearly lost there), the guests were able to concentrate fully on preparing for the game.
The first quarter in particular seemed to underline this thesis in the long term. While Ulm was desperately trying to find his rhythm, the guests gradually pulled away. The 29:13 for Würzburg came as a shock to the fans.
As a result, a game developed in which Ulm kept trying to get close – and at times managed to do so – and the Würzburg Baskets formulated an answer with just as nice regularity.
The best example was the final phase: First the hosts fought their way up to 76:78 – then Würzburg hit back humorlessly and made the preliminary decision with a 7:0 run.
duel in focus: The clash between Ulm’s new signing Bruno Caboclo and Würzburg’s Nicolas Carvacho, which had previously been promised as a hot duel, developed contrary to the outcome of the game, because Caboclo was more successful with 20 points than Carvacho, who only collected four points.
Pay please: The guests from the three-man line showed a fine hand, because with ten goals in 21 attempts they came up with a good rate of 48 percent. It was also helpful that the winners of the evening only allowed themselves eleven turnovers, while Ulm produced 20 of them.
player of the game: This title can be shared by two Würzburgers who played a decisive part in their team’s success: Stanley Whittaker had 21 points and seven assists, CJ Bryce scored 20 points and four assists.
The Germans: Karim Jallow excelled at the hosts with 13 points and seven rebounds, at Würzburg Filip Stanic remained rather reserved with five points and five rebounds.
On the edge of the gang: Ulmer again had to do without three tall players: Nico Bretzel, Philipp Herkenhoff and Sagaba Konate were injured.
Miscellaneous: After his first appearance for Ulm in the Eurocup, new signing Caboclo has now also celebrated his debut in the easyCredit BBL.
What’s next: ratiopharm ulm is challenged on Wednesday, January 18th, in the Eurocup at home against Lietkabelis and on Sunday, January 22nd, at the SYNTAINICS MBC in the easyCredit BBL. The Würzburg Baskets will play ALBA BERLIN at home on Monday, January 23rd.
