Times are tough at Chelsea. For the first season with new owner Todd Boehly, the London club is painful to see. 10th in the Premier League, eliminated and humiliated by Manchester City in the two national cups, there is reason to be worried about the rest of the season. Even the two-way confrontation against Borussia Dortmund in the knockout stages of the Champions League is becoming a concern. In these circumstances, management wants to hit hard. And it’s not the coach who will be the fuse this time, like at the start of the season when Graham Potter replaced Thomas Tuchel.
It is “the end of the era of player power”. Some may worry, especially the stars of the team. According to information from The Telegraph, three elements are more than ever in the hot seat because of their very disappointing level of performance. They are Hakim Ziyech, who is not the first to be questioned, Kai Havertz, appreciated until then, and Christian Pulisic, already announced on the departure this summer, before experiencing a slight recovery under Potter. These three players are not the only ones in the sights of management, which must be very saddened by the contrasting debut of Joao Felix.
All players are threatened
Jorginho, out of contract in six months and yet part of the team as vice-captain, will not be retained, while the captain himself, Cezar Azpilicueta is also in the sights of the leaders. Édouard Mendy, who has become a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga, will not be retained. Even Kalidou Koulibaly, who only arrived last summer against €38m, could bear the brunt of this huge sweep, if an offer were made to him. The owners of the Blues have a big objective behind all this, to lower the wage bill of the club.
However, they already have targets in mind to strengthen the team and compensate for these possible departures with, according to our information, Marcus Thuram, but also Noni Madueke, where talks are also taking place at the moment with the PSV of after Sky Sports. Christopher Nkunku is already locked for next season, as we reported. Josko Gvardiol could accompany the Frenchman from RB Leipzig. Finally, while Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez case looks stalled because of the €127m price tag, Chelsea intend to focus on Brighton’s Moises Caicedo. This would bring a lot of new blood to Graham Potter, more supported than ever.
