Germany Refuses to Follow Poland’s Footsteps, Refuses to Send Leopard Tanks to Ukraine

BERLIN – Defense Minister German Christine Lambrecht told local media that Berlin had no plans to supply Leopard main battle tanks to Ukraine . His statement came after before Poland decided to send the German-built tank to Kiev.

“This decision has not been made,” Lambrecht said when asked about a possible delivery.

“Questions about such supplies do not arise at the moment,” he said, adding that Berlin would not make a decision on its own Russia TodayFriday (13/1/2023).

Even so, Lambrecht has not ruled out shipping completely.

“In the times in which we live, we are advised to adapt to changing circumstances,” he said, adding that the right approach is not to rule anything out.

He also confirmed that Berlin would fulfill its promise to send Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Kiev. The transfer must be made in a way that affects the German Armed Forces as little as possible.

Kiev has long requested battle tanks from its Western backers amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. Berlin has so far been reluctant to comply with these demands, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz repeatedly arguing that no other NATO country would provide Ukraine with such weapons.

Earlier on Thursday, the spokesman for the Polish government, Piotr Muller, said that Warsaw not only wanted to support Kiev with its delivery of tanks, but also “enforce certain behaviors” by other countries and “force” them to do the same.
