Is called Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV the new extended-range electric version of the crossover that uses a new generation of the rotary engine Wankel as generator. It joins the pure electric version called e-Skyactive and in Italy it is offered with a price list of 38.150 euro.
The Japanese house, always very unique in its technical proposals, with the Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV it therefore eliminates the so-called “recharge anxiety” that characterizes some EVs. The powertrain consists of a hybrid system where the thermal part performs the function of generator. The unit electric delivers 170 CV and 260Nm of torque and is powered by a 17.8 kWh battery lithium-ion capable of guaranteeing up to 85 km of travel in electric mode. Then the autonomy is expanded by the compact rotary engine Wankel of 830 cm3 with 74 CV at 4,700 rpm which can count on a petrol tank of 50 liters.
With a rotor radius of 120mm (the trochoidal curve of rotor motion) and a rotor width of 76mm, its compact size allowed for coaxial placement andintegration with the electric motor, the decelerator and the generator to obtain a unit with an overall width of less than 840 mm, housed in the hood of the MX-30 BEV without structural modifications. The engineers have reduced the weight of the internal combustion engine by more than 15 kg by using aluminum for the side housing section.
The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV is equipped with three driving modes depending on the situation: Normal, EV and Recharge. There Normal mode offers electric drive as long as the battery charge is sufficient; if a higher power is required, for example in the acceleration phase, the rotary engine generator is activated. There IV mode is only electric while with the Reload mode it is possible to conserve the amount of energy in the battery for specific needs (in the evening and for traveling around city centres).
To “fill up” you can use single-phase and three-phase charging (in AC) and fast charging (in DC). Using a 36 kW fast charging unit, the battery can be recharged from 20% to 80% in about 25 minutes. With the normal 11 kW three-phase (AC) recharge, the accumulator can be recharged in about 50 minutes, which becomes 1 hour and 30 with the 7.2 kW single-phase.
Three trim levels are available for the Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV: Prime line (38.150), Exclusive Line (39.100) e Makoto (41,400). To celebrate the return of the Wankel engine, the Mazda e-Skyactiv R-EV will also be available in a limited edition Editing R, which is priced at 45.650 euro. The latter is distinguished by some specific aesthetic customizations, such as for example the aluminum rims, optimized from an aerodynamic point of view, the Maroon Rouge Metallic body color, a metallic tint that pays homage to the color of the roof of the Mazda R360 Coupé, the first car of the house, and was then also used on the 2020 models in a special edition for the 100th Anniversary of Mazda.
Then there are several “goodies” such as the key casing (the front and rear shells of the remote), with the horizontal edges of the front shell designed so that they have a curvature at the same angle as the sides of the rotors in the rotary engine of the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV. Additionally, the remote’s sculpted sides that slope outward are 2.5mm wide (the same width as the rotor’s radial seal grooves) and are finished in a high-gloss coating. Other customizations include specific floor mats and seats with embroidered headrests. To all customers who decide to book it by March 31, the Japanese house will offer up to 8,500 euros of benefits.
