Attorney General United States of America (AS) Merrick Garland appoint a special prosecutor who will investigate the findings of state secret documents that were improperly stored in the President’s residence and former office Joe Biden. The investigation aims to find out whether there was a violation of law in this regard.
As reported ReutersFriday (13/1/2023), the appointment of this special prosecutor is reminiscent of a similar case that ensnared the former President Donald Trumpwhen secret documents were also found in his residence after he was no longer US President.
The probe is seen as a distraction for Biden, who has previously criticized Trump’s handling of classified documents. This case could also cast a shadow over Biden as he prepares for the 2024 election.
In his statement, Garland named Robert Hur, who served as the top federal prosecutor in Maryland during the Trump administration, as special counsel in the investigation.
Garland said Hur would act as a quasi-independent attorney to determine whether classified documents from the Biden era as US Vice President were improperly stored at Biden’s residence in Delaware and in his former office in a think-tank in Washington.
Garland confirmed that Hur would investigate “whether any person or entity broke the law” in this regard.
The White House, in its statement, made it clear that Biden was not aware of the contents of the classified documents. The White House also stated that classified materials were found in a garage and a room nearby at the Biden residence.
