A Tesla landed at the bottom of a pool in California – the driver had apparently mixed up the pedals. The three passengers were rescued in time.
Charging electric cars takes significantly longer than filling up a conventional combustion engine with fuel. On the other hand, the Stromer are usually clearly ahead when it comes to acceleration. While a combustion engine first has to “up to speed”, an electric car hisses away when you press the accelerator pedal – a property that, according to a study, Tesla drivers in particular like to exploit. What is basically a practical feature, for example if you want to get out of an exit before the oncoming traffic, can have bad consequences if you accidentally step on the right pedal. The occupants of a Tesla in the US state of California also had to find out.
Tesla driver mixes up gas and brake – and sinks Stromer in the pool
As reported by the Pasadena fire department on Twitter, the driver pressed the accelerator pedal instead of the brake – after which the Tesla crashed through a wall and then landed in a pool. The situation was anything but safe because there were two adults and a child in the car.

Driver sinks Tesla in pool – “Looks like a modern art installation”
However, the three passengers were very lucky because their accident was noticed by passers-by. The “good Samaritans”, as the fire department calls them, jumped into the pool and saved the casualties. Nevertheless, some sarcastic comments quickly accumulated under the tweet from the fire department:
- “I thought Teslas could work like a boat for a short time?”
- “Just put the wagon in a big bowl of raw rice for a couple of days – then it dries up again quickly.”
- “Who is the submarine commander?”
- “Is this covered by the Tesla warranty?”
- “Looks like a modern art installation.”
Driver sinks Tesla in the pool – not the first strange situation caused by a mix-up of pedals
It is by no means the first time that a Tesla has ended up in a strange situation by confusing power and brakes. A while ago, a Tesla Model 3 looking for a parking space ended up on the roof of an ambulance – another Tesla, also looking for a parking space, ended up on a huge pile of rocks. In the last case, too, the driver was very lucky, because he almost ended up in the ocean with his car.
