Microsoft has an Xbox update which makes the consoles kinder to the environment and the wallet. Microsoft says the update makes Xbox “the first carbon aware console”.
With the update installed, the console will schedule updates for those times during the regular update schedule when the amount of electricity generated by fossil energy sources is at its lowest in the local power grid. The idea is to reduce dependence on fossil energy sources and emissions from them. As a bonus, the company believes that the update can reduce your electricity costs, which few would object to with today’s electricity prices. Changes are also made to reduce power consumption when the console is turned off.
The update is currently only available to Xbox Insider subscribers (a voluntary thing that gives earlier access to various software). It should be released to all Xbox users shortly. The same functions are already available for Windows 11 computers.
