From September 2023, 6th graders will have an extra hour of French or math per week. This is revealed this Thursday, January 12, by a circular published by the Ministry of National Education.
Level too low
The goal of the Minister of Education Pap Ndiaye is the improvement of the general level of the pupils, considered to be too low. In sixth grade, 1 in 4 students does not have the required level in French, and 1 in 3 in maths. From the start of the 2023 school year, 6th graders, without exception, will have one hour of support for those who have the most difficulty, or one hour of deepening for those who are more comfortable.
The students will be divided into groups according to their levels, determined according to their grades for the year in CM2 and the national assessments that they will take at the start of the school year, details France Info who has been able to consult the circular.

Details for groups
For support groups for students in difficulty: the ministry wants the little ones to be supervised by voluntary school teachers, accustomed to learning the fundamentals. For in-depth groups: the hour per week will be provided by college teachers.
The groups will focus on a specific aspect of French or math, depending on the difficulties or ease of the 6th graders. Namely: spelling, vocabulary, reading, calculations, fractions, and geometry. At the end of a term, college students who have progressed can change group, going from support to deepening or vice versa.
