Rohit, not Ponting, who has won two World Cups, is the best; Gambhir with eccentricity

Gautam Gambhir is one of the best batsmen Indian cricket has ever seen. Gambhir was a crucial presence in the Indian team that won the 2011 World Cup. Gambhir is just one century short of joining Ricky Ponting on the list of batsmen with most centuries in ODI cricket.

Gambhir’s outlandish comments comparing him to Ricky Ponting and Rohit Sharma, who won the World Cup twice for Australia, are now gaining attention. Gambhir says that Ponting’s performance in Indian sub-continental countries is not so good and therefore Rohit is better than him. His reaction was to Star Sports ahead of the second match of the India-Sri Lanka ODI series.

“One thing that surprises me is that Rohit has scored so many centuries in the last four-five years. Five or six years ago, Rohit did not have this consistency. He must have scored at least 20 centuries in the last six years. Rohit is better than Ricky Ponting. Because Ponting doesn’t have much records in the Indian subcontinent,’ Gambhir said.

Ponting does not see much difference from Rohit Sharma when it comes to run rate. He has an average of 41 from matches against India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. But there is a big difference in centuries. Out of Ponting’s total of 30 centuries, only six have been scored in the Indian subcontinent. Rohit, on the other hand, has scored 13 centuries at an average of 47 in ODIs played outside the Indian subcontinent.

Currently, Rohit has scored 29 centuries and 9537 runs at an average of 49 runs in 237 matches. Ponting, on the other hand, has scored 13704 runs from 375 matches at an average of 42 including 30 centuries.
