Cuba celebrates the 205th anniversary of the San Alejandro Academy of Art

On this day, an exhibition of the students of the centennial educational center will also be inaugurated in its gallery in the manifestations of painting, engraving and sculpture, among others.

The Academy is the oldest center of its kind in Latin America and the second oldest educational institution in Cuba, preceded only by the University of Havana.

Founded in 1818 in the Convent of San Agustín in Old Havana, over time San Alejandro settled in different parts of the Cuban capital, until in 1962 he moved to a building on 31st street and 100th street, in the municipality of Marianao, where it is still located.

After the revolutionary triumph of 1959, the study plans were expanded with new contents of an artistic and humanistic nature which transformed the institute into a didactic model and a national methodological centre.

Famous personalities of Cuban culture have integrated the faculty or graduated in San Alejandro.

The school archive has important historical documents from 1927 to the present which attest to the passage through its classrooms of Cuban personalities such as Camilo Cienfuegos, Silvio Rodríguez, Vicente Revuelta, Ramiro Guerra and Eduardo Chivás.

There is also the passage of the fourteen-year-old José Martí, who made Bolívar’s face one of his first drawings, a reliable example of his libertarian vocation from his early adolescence.
