Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – NATO and the European Union (EU) on Wednesday (11/1/2023) announced a joint task force aimed at strengthening the protection of critical infrastructure. This happened when both faced threats from Russia.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said the task force would bring together EU and NATO experts to study key infrastructure vulnerabilities and recommend ways to better protect them.
“We saw the sabotage of Nord Stream which showed that we have to be prepared and that we have to face this new type of threat,” von der Leyen said in a meeting with NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg. AFP extension.
The NATO secretary general said both sides “want to see together how to make our critical infrastructure, technology and supply chains more resilient”.
“This will be an important step in making our society stronger and safer,” Stoltenberg said.
Russia’s incursion into Ukraine has disrupted Europe’s security fabric and prompted calls for greater coordination between the NATO and EU military alliances.
This step was taken after the sabotage attack on the Nord Stream pipeline last year. This same pipeline supplies gas from Russia to continental Europe.
Investigations by Danish and Swedish authorities confirmed that the leak was due to sabotage, and experts say only countries have the means to carry out such an operation.
But investigations have yet to identify who was responsible. NATO stepped up its naval deployment in the region after the pipeline attack.
