ANNOUNCEMENTS•
A 20-year-old man who got behind the wheel without a license and killed a child while racing in Hoogezand has been sentenced to a fine of 1250 euros. He was also given a suspended week’s confinement because it was the second time he had driven without a licence.
It happened in February 2021. The then 18-year-old went for a ride with his mother instead of co-driver. The woman is held responsible for allowing her son to drive a car without a license and for causing a dangerous situation. She was fined 1090 euros.
“Sem asked if he could drive that part and I allowed him. It was the dumbest decision I’ve ever made, I regret it a lot,” he said according to RTV North in court today. His son also testified sorry.
“The accident could not have been avoided”
Bam, 4, was playing near parked cars in his neighborhood and suddenly ran into the street. An investigation showed that no motorist could have avoided an accident. The man was not driving faster than the speed limit. The boy was revived, but he died at sight to his wounds.
The judge does not hold the man responsible for the accident. The judge thinks he caused danger on the road by not driving carefully enough after watching two boys play.
The man and his mother have also lost their driving licenses for the time being.
