Current events in Ukraine
The battles for Bakhmut in the Donetsk region have made the leadership of Ukraine, which previously doubted how deliberately involved in battles with heavy losses, now change their mind, according to the New York Times (NYT), in a publication dedicated to the situation around Bakhmut.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy recently openly stated that he was not sure whether the battles for Severodonetsk and Lysichansk were worth around 100 casualties a day, the newspaper recalled.
However, Bakhmut’s defense, which was also badly damaged, has now become a symbol of Ukraine’s national struggle against the occupiers.
According to analysts, Bahmut’s tactical value is in high doubt, but now the battle, which is the longest in the war, is of great strategic importance for both sides.
The current situation on this sector of the front forces the Ukrainian army to change its strategy.
In other major battles of this war, the Ukrainian army managed to avoid direct confrontations, successfully maneuvering and using long-range Western weapons to force Russia to retreat.
Currently, the Ukrainian command has to take into account the new realities presented by Russia, and especially the masses of Russian manpower carrying out frontal attacks.
Some 100,000 inhabitants lived in Bakhmut before the war, but now only 7,000 remain.
However, for Russia, which has not shown great successes on the fronts for some time, the capture of Bakhmut would be of great psychological importance, according to the NYT.
Smiltēns promises Ukraine constant help from Latvia until victory
Latvia’s support to Ukraine will be unwavering until its victory today, accompanying ten “Rīgas satiksme” buses and humanitarian aid to Kiev, said Saeima chairman Edvards Smiltēns (AS).
He stressed that this help is very important because buses with shrapnel pierced sides still circulate on the streets of Kiev.
Citing the oft-quoted phrase of the Russian attackers, “We can repeat,” Smiltēns pointed out, “We can also rewind.” And we’ll do it for as long as it takes.”
“Rīgas satiksme” board chairman Jineta Innus stressed that these buses, which are brought to Kiev, have been serving Riga for 20 years, but they are in good technical condition and the company has taken care of them properly. No later than December, they hit the trails on the streets of the capital.
“With these buses we send our work, our love and our good wishes to the Ukrainian people,” Innusa said.
On the other hand, Riga City Council Deputy Mayor Edvards Ratnieks (NA/LRA) thanked the city residents for the provided loads, for the opportunity to fill the buses with the things Ukrainians need.
As the LETA agency was informed by the communications department of the Riga City Council, taking into account the cold and Russia’s targeted attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, residents also donated warm clothes, blankets, sleeping bags, stoves and electricity generators.
The total volume of the cargo is around 50 tons, while in monetary terms the total value of the donations for humanitarian aid is around 200,000 euros.
LETA has already reported that today at 8:15 in Riga, ten buses donated by Riga departed from Vestienas iela 35 bound for Kiev.
The event was also attended by the Ukrainian ambassador to Latvia Oleksandrs Mishchenko, who thanked for this help and underlined its importance.
LETA has already reported that residents have been asked to fill the buses with humanitarian aid: baby goods, hygiene items, long-life food, drinking water and pet food.
The buses from Riga will go to the Ukrainian-Polish border, where they will be met and taken further by representatives of Ukraine.
LETA has already announced that the first 11 buses donated by Riga, filled with humanitarian aid donated by residents, left for Ukraine at the end of April 2022.
