According to the Central News Agency, a South Korean YouTuber started the “Neighborhood Guardian” channel in October last year, which is dedicated to uploading the trading scenes of monitoring drug dealers, those who distribute minor sexual exploitation videos and the arrest process of criminals. Around 300 cases have been reported to law enforcement so far, and in around 100 cases the perpetrators have been arrested.
Sells pork knuckle part-time as an undercover agent
“Neighborhood Guardian” was interviewed by the Central News Agency, revealing that he is not a policeman, nor a related practitioner, but an ordinary father who runs a take-out pork knuckle franchise. He emphasized that he created this channel for his son’s future and to improve the place where he lives, but before him he had no experience in related activities.
The ‘Neighborhood Guardian’ channel was inspired by a program in which a transvestite woman entered a sex trading site and decided to delve into the crime scene. Before I started, I did a ton of homework, including learning about drug dealing cases from family members who were police officers, and learning various code words used by drug dealers on the Internet.
The channel started with a combination of 2 people. As Korean media reports and videos spread, it attracted more like-minded partners. Currently, about 10 people are participating. They will accept relevant reports through email and KAKAO TALK communication software, and then conduct filtering investigations. Including repeat reports, 10 to 15 reports are received per day.
In order to avoid the possibility of “law enforcement phishing” and invalidate the evidence, he stressed that these operations did not cooperate with the police at all, were carried out independently as ordinary people, collecting evidence by themselves and directly reporting to the police crime scene police. The scope of the cases involved included drug trafficking and drunk driving. , illegal gambling, sex trade, exemption from illegal military service, etc., and about 300 cases have been reported so far, of which about 100 cases of criminals have been arrested, and more than 50 cases are under investigation.
Spontaneously shooting prisoners means getting justice
The Yonhap News Agency reported that the “Neighborhood Guardian” has become quite “famous” among the police stations in northeastern Seoul where they often operate. The drug dealers caught are not only “little guys” who were trading on the spot, but big fish were caught as well.
“Neighborhood Guardian” currently has almost limited advertising revenue due to the video content and relies only on a small amount of donations from viewers to subsidize some expenses such as gas money and repair costs. Some viewers left a message asking if they had received a reward from the police. “Neighborhood Guardian” said no, saying, “I’ve heard the police are looking into this internally. If there’s any good news, I’ll share it with you.” The income is not stable, and he is often accidentally injured in the process of arresting prisoners. He said that “obviously his family members are very against it and some viewers even disagree.” However, he believes that creating this channel is also the only way to protect himself, and he will continue to do so.
“Neighborhood Guardian” once said in a post on the channel that the spontaneous arrest of criminals is to obtain justice and exert the influence of good deeds, hoping to eradicate crimes that endanger society. He also pointed out that in the face of the continuous letters recently, the inmates demanding the removal of the video put forward the condition of “100 million donations” (Korean won). There is no way to know if they are truly repentant, and they will not help no one to remove the videos in the future”.
