According to the paper, Apple is working hard on a circuit that can simultaneously control Bluetooth and WiFi communications, thus making the company independent of suppliers, in particular Broadcom. Among the long-term plans there would be the creation of a “superchip” which, in addition to the aforementioned functions, will also include a control unit for mobile network communication.
However, developing such a complex circuit is not necessarily a trivial task, at least Apple has not been able to solve its long-cherished dream of developing its own 5G modem in-house, so Qualcomm-supplied 5G modem should be the first in the future it can be replaced by the Cupertino company in the next generation of iPhone.
Apple bought Intel’s modem manufacturing division in 2019, and the company wanted to bring the first internal modems to market this year, but that goal could be delayed by at least a year.
