A group of scientists is developing a new way to transform cancer cells into powerful agents anticancer. Researchers have developed a new cell therapy approach to eliminate and induce established tumors immunity long term. In which way? Train the immune system so it can prevent the cancer from coming back. The results were published in the journal Science Translational Medicine .
“Our team pursued a simple idea: take cancer cells and turn them into vaccines and anticancer drugs,” said corresponding author Khalid Shah, research vice chair in the Brigham Department of Neurosurgery and a professor at Harvard Medical School and all. ‘Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI). “Use Genetic engineeringwe are reusing cancer cells to develop a vaccine which kills cancer cells and stimulates the immune system to destroy primary tumors and prevent cancer.”

The parallel between carrier pigeons and cancer cells
Like homing pigeons returning to roost, live cancer cells travel long distances through the brain and return to other companion cancer cells. Thus, taking advantage of this unique feature, these cells were designed to facilitate the immune system’s job of detecting, marking and remembering, thus preparing the immune system for a long-term anti-tumor response. The team also built a two-layer safety switch into the tumor cell which, when activated, eliminates therapeutic tumor cells if needed. The team tested the vaccine on mice and the results were promising.
