NYC Weather Breaks Records – NBC New York (47)

what to know

  • New York City’s weather remains unseasonably warm for the next two days, with temperatures soaring to a record 66 degrees in Central Park by noon. Showers are possible later.
  • The risk of showers diminishes on Friday as temperatures dip into the 40s.
  • There may be a light accumulation of snow in parts of the Hudson Valley on Friday, but those above freezing temperatures will likely cap the totals significantly; We’re back to winter morning temperatures this weekend.

NEW YORK — What month is it again? January? You can understand why we are confused.

Central Park hit 66 degrees Wednesday at noon, tying the daily record set in 1950, while Long Island’s Islip in Suffolk County set a new record of 65 degrees. This broke the daily high of 64 degrees set in 1998. Many other places were within one degree of the all-time high.

The average high in the city this time of year is 40 degrees, so we’re talking WAY above average.

The spell of unusually warm weather continues through Thursday, although temperatures will drop back into the 50s, closer to normal, but still hotter than would normally be expected.

However, along with the heat comes clouds and pockets of constant rain. Expect some intermittent showers on Thursday that will last through the night and into Friday. The rains won’t be heavy or unrelenting, adding about a half-inch to the metro area by the weekend.

We finally got dry and cool on Friday, with a few snowflakes possible north and west of the city as the system shifts. We returned to average January temperatures this weekend, with highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s and 30s. Maybe regional ski resorts can start snowing again, with freezing temperatures expected for much of next week.

No significant accumulations are expected on Friday, even in the highest altitude areas. Any precipitation on Friday will be the latest in the disrupted weather pattern.

A fast-moving disruption could bring another round of light snow to the region by the end of the weekend, although low to low accumulations are expected. If anything, there will be the potential for rain and/or light snow in some areas Sunday through Monday, but that’s far from certain for now.

The weather pattern looks clear for much of next week, with temperatures remaining around 40 degrees.
