According to Deutsche Bahn, boarding and disembarking are the main reason for delays. To contain the lawsuit, Hamburg is now getting employment displays.
Hamburg – Overcrowded Deutsche Bahn trains and delays: Hamburg Central Station is not only one of the busiest stations in Germany. It is also particularly prone to delays. A provision for fewer gatherings on the platform and greater hope for a seat. The heads of Deutsche Bahn have announced a new service: a capacity display which will be tested for the first time in Hamburg in February and, last but not least, should contain the cause of all delays in local transport.
First name: | Hamburg Central Station |
Built: | 1912 |

The travelers: | about 500,000 travelers a day |
Precise employment information: The display aims to reduce delays in Hamburg
A few weeks ago, the heads of Deutsche Bahn presented new state-of-the-art trains between Hamburg and Lübeck. Already at the end of January 2023 they should be launched with free WiFi, monitors and other outlets. The next update will follow on that route in February: Hamburg’s main train station, whose planned conversion could cost several billion euros, will receive a display showing occupancy for the first time.
Hamburg is therefore taking a measure that should already be reflected in the local transport offers of the S-Bahn. Before the first regional train line between Hamburg and Lübeck wants to determine the number of passengers, the S-Bahn Hamburg and Stuttgart should try out the new method for the first time.
Nationwide since the end of 2024: How Hamburg’s occupation displays work
If the display is red, the wagon is fully loaded. Yellow represents average occupancy, while green gives passengers light of that color, so finding a seat shouldn’t be a problem in that case. As reported by German news agency (dpa) should also indicate the usage. Represented with person symbols, it should be easy for travelers to figure out which car promises the greatest seating probability.
It can be a useful service for train passengers. Another plus: Deutsche Bahn also promises to save time with the display. Pews in the train door area that are noisy dpa-Ratios that are meant to determine occupancy, as well as light sensors that are meant to determine the occupancy of passing trains on the way to the next stop, should ensure that transferring passengers takes less time. The time window in which the respective train stops should also be shortened with the technology.

Hamburg is the first to do so. As reported by the online portal schiene.de, further occupancy indicators will be installed in the coming months: in April in the Rhine-Main area and in May in Berlin. By the end of 2024, announcements should therefore be part of everyday train life nationwide. The railway says around a quarter of all regional railways in Germany are expected to be equipped with the technology. According to Deutsche Bahn, it is the main reason for all delays: boarding and alighting blocks train traffic. Efforts are now being made to contain the problem.
