One person died in a collision between two trains in Mexico City

Two subway trains collided in a tunnel in Mexico City on Saturday, killing one person and injuring 57, authorities in the Mexican capital said.

Claudia Sheinbaum, head of the municipality of the city of 20 million people, announced on the spot that “there are 57 injured, some of them with minor injuries, but they have also been taken to hospital, and unfortunately there is one dead”.

The accident occurred on the 3rd subway line that connects the north and south of Mexico City between the “Potrero” and “La Raza” stations, the head of the municipality informed, adding that the conductor of the train suffered the most .

The Mexico City Metro, inaugurated in 1969, is 226 kilometers long, its 12 lines have 195 stations.

Authorities estimate that the Mexico City Metro carried 837 million passengers in 2021.

However, the subway system is often criticized for not being well maintained.

In May 2021, the Mexico City Metro bridge collapsed. 26 people died and several dozen were injured in the crash.
