Roscioli, one of Rome’s best trattorias, will open its first restaurant outside of Italy, in New York City in Spring 2023. The restaurant will open on Macdougal Street replacing Ariel Arce’s Niche Niche restaurant.
The Roscioli name may not be familiar in the United States, but it’s a place that according to Eater, They have become a must for tourists and a place frequented by Romans as well.
“If you’ve heard knowledgeable friends tell of their trip to Rome anytime in the past two decades, chances are you’re already familiar with Roscioli,” Food and Wine contributor Regan Stephens also wrote.
The popular trattoria born as a bakery has been offering red pizza, white pizza, panettone and Neapolitan focaccia since the 1970s; currently it also serves baked pasta and other delicacies of Italian cuisine.
Among the specialties of the Antico Forno Roscioli bakery there are Roman pizza (also in pan) and Roman focaccia.
Stephens describes how, in the old bakery, the tables surround the deli display case and fill the cellar. “There you will feast on artisanal meats and cheeses such as handmade mortadella and grated Parmesan, creamy burrata, as well as Cantabrian anchovies, extremely memorable carbonara and other traditional Roman pastas.”
Roscioli has expanded into three locations in the city’s Regola neighborhood. Its second location is Roscioli Salumeria, where cured meats and cheeses stand out. In 2017 Rimessa Roscioli opens, where private tastings, cooking and wine courses are held.
Eater notes that the restaurant will also be offering its takeout items. “A truncated but robust selection,” says Arce, who will join the Roscioli team by relocating to New York City from Italy.
Roscioli in New York is shaping up to be Roscioli Salumeria with a kitchen-style deli and wine bar on the ground floor. The first Roscioli outside Rome should open in April.
