At least 17 people died and 22 were injured in a serious road accident in China on Saturday night to Sunday, Chinese state media reported. The incident occurred around 01:00 local time in the village of Taoling near the city of Nanchang in the east of the country.
According to the China News Agency Xinhua drove a truck into a group of people standing in front of a crematorium. A funeral was due to take place at the crematorium on Sunday morning, and relatives and friends of the deceased were engaged in a tribute.
Nanchang police issued a fog warning one hour after the incident. Weather conditions were previously thought to have played a role. “Visibility on the road is poor, making it easier for traffic accidents to occur,” police said. “Please watch your fog lights, drive slowly and carefully, keep a safe distance from the car in front, avoid pedestrians and don’t change lanes to pass someone.”
Serious traffic accidents occur regularly in China, partly due to a lack of strict safety regulations. In September last year, 27 people died in a bus accident in the southwest of the country.
