Satellite emergency communication function reaches Android phones.. Details

Qualcomm has indicated that its new feature will be powered by Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF systems and will be supported by the Iridium-powered satellite constellation.

With Snapdragon Satellite, Android phone makers will be able to provide connectivity to users virtually anywhere, operating on Iridium’s flexible L-band spectrum for uplinks and downlinks.

When will the feature be available?

Qualcomm said emergency messaging on the Snapdragon Satellite is expected to be available on next-generation smartphones launching in select regions starting in the second half of 2023, and it’s not yet clear which regions will get the feature.

But keep in mind that the feature will only work on phones running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, so it’s clear that it’s only designed to work on powerful and advanced Android phones, and Apple’s Emergency SOS feature is also available in the series. iPhone 14, but both are on A16 Bionic and A16 A15 Bionic processors.

Will Snapdragon Satellite work on devices other than mobile phones?
