BERKELLAND – Slingeland hospital in Doetinchem has had to add extra beds as pressure from flu patients is rising. According to a spokesman, the hospital is struggling to find a place for patients to enter.
“The hospital is completely full,” says a Slingeland spokesperson. “We see the flu in most patients. We are also seeing an increase in patients with the corona virus again.” As the beds are sometimes full, the emergency room in Doetinchem has been temporarily closed several times. “We then ask the ambulances to continue, because there is no space”, explains the spokesman. “The pressure on hospitals in the region is therefore enormous.” Slingeland is also struggling to place people outside as pressure on home care is mounting.
There is also currently a high level of absenteeism among Slingeland staff. “He IS suitable and fit,” sighs the spokesman. “Because of the illness among nurses, we are asking staff to come to work more, but that also brings extra pressure.” Visitors are therefore advised to ensure that the flu wave does not spread. There is still a hygiene column at the main entrance and visitors can take a face mask. “And don’t come to the hospital if you have a cold,” the spokesperson said.
SKB in Winterswijk is also noticing the crowds
The Koningin Beatrix regional hospital in Winterswijk also notes that it is busy. Despite the fact that many patients end up in the hospital, no operations should be canceled for the time being. “But it’s complicated. Not specifically due to patients with influenza virus or RS virus. The crowds are mainly because it is currently more difficult to offer patients who can be discharged, but who need treatment, a place in a nursing home and district care,” a hospital spokesman said. As a result, some patients have to wait longer and therefore spend more time in the hospital.
“Fortunately, our partnership with both nursing homes and district nursing is very good and together we do everything we can to get patients the right care in the right place as quickly as possible,” said a spokesperson.
