In 2002, the Museum of Sex opened in New York, which will now have a second location in Miami when it opens its doors in 2023, with the aim of “celebrating the cultural significance of human sexuality”, in an area of nearly 3,000 square meters of permanent and temporary exhibitions.
The Museum of Sex in New York has launched more than 40 exhibits committed to preserving, presenting and celebrating the cultural significance of human sexuality. Its exhibitions and programs span genres that reflect the complexity of human sexuality, bridging the present with the past and balancing the serious and the playful.
The Miami office will be located in a converted warehouse in northwest Miami.
Designed by Snøhetta architecture firmit will have three large galleries, as well as retail spaces and a café.
In addition to housing more than 20,000 artifacts and artworks that make up the museum’s permanent collection, including photography, technology and clothing, the project also includes spaces for permanent and rotating exhibits.
The museum will open in 2023 with temporary exhibitions such as Modern Sex: 100 Years of Design and Decency, as well as Desire Machines by Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama.
It will also host permanent exhibits, including the ongoing New York exhibit called Super Funland: Journey into the Erotic Carnival, designed by a number of designers and artists, including fashion designer Bart Hess, artist Rebecca Purcell, and RuPaul.
