A magnitude 5 earthquake was registered yesterday evening at 04:52 between the Turkish coast and the Greek island of Lesbos in the Aegean Sea, reported the Turkish Directorate for Emergencies and Natural Disasters Presidency (AFAD).
The epicenter was 14.29 km from Ayvaçuk district in Canakkale district and 16 km. from p. Lesbos.
The earthquake was found to have occurred on a ridge at a depth of 14.14 kilometers.
The quake was felt on the Greek island, as well as in Canakkale and Balkesir, Turkey. According to the first investigations, there were no victims or damages during the earthquake. Many citizens spent the night outdoors, in front of their homes, for fear of aftershocks.
This morning AFAD announced that there was another earthquake of magnitude 4.8 at 09:39 (08:39 Bulgarian time), whose epicenter was in the same place in the Aegean Sea, between the island of Lesvos and the Turkish coast at Assos.
Canakkale district administration issued a written statement regarding the earthquakes. “According to preliminary information, there are no reports of casualties, injuries or damage.”,
There has been activity in the region recently. The aftershocks continue. In the last 10 hours there have been 4 earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 3.4 on the Richter scale.
At 05:59 another earthquake of magnitude 3.9 occurred, with its epicenter in the northern part of the island of Lesvos.
