Jeddah: Saudi Zakat, the tax and customs authority, has announced that duty-free shops operating at airports, land border checkpoints and ports in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to sell alcohol. The Authority’s explanation is in response to a question raised on the Authority’s Twitter handle in this regard. The authority also clarified that this decision complies with the rules for opening duty free shops in the country. According to the rules and regulations for setting up duty free markets, only goods and products that can be traded in the country will be allowed into the duty free markets and therefore the sale of liquor will not be allowed here, the authority said.

Relaxation of rules for duty free markets

The stores will be set up in multiple centres

The duty free shops are currently operating in the passenger lounges of the departure terminals of Jeddah King Abdulaziz International Airport, Riyadh King Khalid International Airport, Dammam King Fahd International Airport and Medina Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Airport . As part of the new concessions, duty-free shops will be opened as needed at multiple entry points in coordination with various departments at airports and ports. Duty free shops are exempt from customs duties and other taxes under the Free Market Act of the Uniform Customs Act. The authority also clarified that the level of tax reduction will vary from country to country depending on the location of the duty free shops .
