California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Wednesday in the face of an imminent arrival of a massive winter storm in order to respond effectively to the phenomenon, agencies said.
“California is taking action to protect people from the impacts of the approaching storm. The state of emergency will allow the state to respond quickly as the storm develops and support local officials in their response,” the Democratic governor said.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) said via Twitter that the natural phenomenon will bring heavy rains Wednesday through Thursday, and areas of urban flooding and rising rivers are expected.
He also asked people to stay alert if they live near waterways, follow evacuation orders, and be extra careful when driving at night.
That’s why California residents organize to pack sandbags to prevent flooding.
Nearly 150 milliliters of rain fell in San Francisco on Saturday, making it the city’s second wettest day in more than 170 years, according to the US National Weather Service.
The Declaration of a State of Emergency authorizes the mobilization of the California National Guard and places the State Operations Center at its peak readiness level.
