The second hand in business, to improve the carbon footprint

A company’s carbon footprint is calculated every four years. From 1is January 2023, all companies with more than 500 employees in mainland France (250 abroad) must include scope 3 in their carbon footprint. Violations will be punished with a fine of 10,000 euros, against the previous 1,500.

This scope 3 includes all indirect CO2 emissions related to the operation of the company. Employee commutes between home and work, the CO2 cost of furniture manufacturing, etc.

What is Scope 3?

“It is an often underestimated part, but according to Ademe it represents almost 75% of the carbon footprint of companies”, explains Sophie Scantamburlo-Contreras. Co-founder of an application that promotes second-hand furniture in the business world, the entrepreneur notes that there is an eco-responsible awareness in the business world.

The platform Purpose3, which intends to sell, buy or donate company furniture, has saved over 10,000 pieces of equipment from the dumpster, 350 tons of waste and thus avoided the emission of more than 400 tons of CO2 in one year. Less burdensome on the wallet and on the environment, the second hand could therefore become more frequent in business.
