golden future
After all, there are bright times in fashion: gold is increasingly present not only in jewelry, but also in accessories and clothing.
Let’s start with Beyoncé. That never hurts, after all, the foremost singer of our time keeps a dedicated line to the zeitgeist, not just in terms of her music, but especially when it comes to her looks. She wears gold in her recent campaign for Tiffany, which launched a few weeks ago. a lot of gold Yes, of course, also as a jewel, but above all on her body in the form of a voluminous trench coat with matching high heels.
Thus Beyoncé presents herself to the whole world as a giant Ferrero Rocher ball – because she has obviously long ago understood what the majority still have to digest: Gold is no longer a pure precious metal. Not a material that can only be highlighted on special occasions, which tends to look old, stuffy or shabby and therefore needs to be used sparingly. On the contrary: gold is becoming more and more present in fashion.
Balmain’s winter collection featured jersey tops and dresses with attached gold plaques that look as modern and futuristic as the droid C-3PO in “Star Wars.” At Celine there are biker boots covered in gold, at Christian Louboutin there are golden clogs and in the next Balenciaga collection the sneaker counterpart. Gold was an inevitable theme, especially in the resort collections: glittering dresses at Dior, metallic trousers at Chanel and Louis Vuitton, ultra-glamorous skirts at Valentino.
It’s clear that all of this was part of the past holiday season, but Christmas and New Years are upon us every year, and wardrobe has rarely been so surprisingly pretty. Furthermore, the trend continues unabated into the spring. Gabriella Hearst showed a series of dresses with gold bibs, while Jil Sander has skirts and handbags made with a kind of gold metal mesh. These things should definitely see the light of day, preferably even shine in the sun.
We have Schiaparelli designer Daniel Roseberry to thank for that. Even when Lady Gaga wore one of her designs to Joe Biden’s inauguration, the large gold dove on her jacket caught her attention. In last January’s couture collection, gold was practically the only color in an otherwise black collection. Not in the form of a few ounces, but in ingots: corsets, rings of Saturn, palms, cuirasses cast entirely of gold.
Roseberry said at the time that she was thinking about 80s and 90s fashion jewelry and wondered why no one did anymore. Only in a modern way? For him, modern means not being afraid of kitsch, but simply using gold as a strong colour, such as pink or bright green. This makes it seem less sacred and still reliably attention-grabbing. You must know: Roseberry is not only a Texan and therefore akin to “Dallas” and “Denver Clan”, he is also the son of a priest, who at first saw all the splendor in churches and church services as the latest fashion show .
Surely the continued preference for gold jewelry, for large earrings, thick necklaces and gold chains among men also plays a role. One of the most memorable fashion moments of this World Cup was France’s round of 16 against Poland, when the referee stopped play because French international Jules Koundé hadn’t taken off his gold chain.
Due to its constant presence in all layers, gold has lost much of its former ostentatious character. It no longer automatically feels like a captain’s dinner on a dream ship or gangsta rap, but more and more like, well, gilded everyday life.
Even a label like Bottega Veneta, best known for its understated designs, has been drawn to a metallic clutch in the recent past. In the autumn/winter collection, gold is mainly used as an accessory or decoration: a thin cream-colored fur is covered with gold drops, resulting in a successful play of soft and hard. The bags are fitted with round golden rivets or have a completely gold-coated handle, which would otherwise be assumed to be made of horn. It is above all the unusual shapes and placements that make the metal appear so modern here.
How do you reconcile with rising inflation, the need to save and the threat of recession? Actually quite good – who knows what tomorrow will bring? If you don’t shine now, you may not have many opportunities to do so. Make the most of every moment – worth its weight in gold.
