Home hockey players Canada won gold medals at the Under 20 World Cup. In the final match, they defeated the Czech Republic 3:2 after extra time. Dylan Guenther scored the winning goal in the 67th minute. For the “Maple Leaves” it is the 20th jubilee title of the junior championship.

The bronze medals went to the players from the USA, who defeated Sweden 8:7 after extra time in a wild game. The Slovak representatives took 6th place after defeat in the quarterfinals against Canada 3:4 after extra time.
It was also Canada’s 35th junior championship medalist (20-10-5). The Czechs won the fourth precious metal (2-1-1) in the independence era and the first after 18 years.
17-year-old Canadian Connor Bedard became the most productive player and also the best scorer in the league. The youngest player in the tournament collected 23 Canadian points on 9 goals and 14 assists in 7 games. He also received the award for the best striker of the World Cup and the most useful player. Slovak Adam Gajan was declared the best goalkeeper, Czech David Jiříček became the best defender.
The next World Championship for Under-20 Players will take place from 26 December 2023 to 5 January 2024 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The start of the final game brought balanced hockey, but the Canadians gradually seized the initiative. They were also helped by the power play used when Dylan Guenther punished David Jiříček’s exclusion. The Czechs had two promising breaks in the first period, but didn’t score.
The Canadians started the second part, who first stopped the weakening and then Shane Wright celebrated his 19th birthday with an individual action with a final goal – 0:2.
The Czechs were unable to overcome the Canadian defense for long, although they created several chances early in the third set. In the 51st minute, Shane Wright did not increase Canada’s lead, and within three minutes the Czechs reduced it. Eduard Šalé hit the post, but an open Jiří Kulich made it 1:2 from close range. 54 seconds passed when Tomáš Hamara’s shot was passed by Jakub Kos and equalized – 2:2.
The duel finally reached extra time. In his opener, both teams had several scoring opportunities. The Canadians finally succeeded when Dylan Guenther took advantage of Joshua Roy’s pass from close range – 2:3.
