Here’s what it is

  • NFL player Damar Hamlin is recovering from cardiac arrest.

  • The Bills player woke up from his coma and asked doctors about the result of the game.

  • US President Joe Biden called the soccer player’s parents.

Remaining in intensive care after suffering cardiac arrest, football pro Damar Hamlin’s condition continues to improve. According to attending physicians at Cincinnati University Hospital, Hamlin has “shown dramatic improvement” over the past 24 hours, the Buffalo Bills said Thursday afternoon. Hamlin appears to be “neurologically fine.”

Meanwhile, Hamlin is awake again. He held hands with his family at the hospital, his agent Ron Butler told CNN. The NFL defenseman is still in critical condition. Hamlin had Tuesday night suffered cardiac arrest during the NFL game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals.

Hamlin woke up for the first time on Thursday night. According to NFL reporter Adam Schefter, the football player wrote to doctors asking who won the game. The doctors told him, “Yes, you won. You won the match of your life.”

US President Biden on the phone with his parents

US President Joe Biden personally encouraged the 24-year-old’s parents. Biden, 80, revealed in a media roundup on Wednesday’s phone call during a business trip that he spoke “at length” with the Buffalo Bills player’s father and mother.

Biden also commented on the debate on the physical dangers in football, which have resurfaced after the emergency. “I think it makes a lot of sense to work on helmets and concussion protocols,” the US president said. But this sport remains “dangerous,” according to Biden, “you just have to acknowledge it.”
