The 83-year-old leader said everyone has flaws that need to be corrected.
Women who wear the hijab incorrectly “are still our daughters,” she added.
Iran has been rocked by protests since mid-September, sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after she was arrested by the “police of virtues” for wearing the wrong headscarf. Others who were arrested together with Amini said that Amini was severely beaten by the morality police. The protests quickly turned into broader dissatisfaction with the situation in the country and with Khamenei.
The protests are brutally repressed by the Iranian authorities, but more and more women are choosing to appear in public without a veil in major Iranian cities.
The morality police are rarely seen on the streets, but the wearing of the veil is monitored by other methods, such as video surveillance.
