The United States House of Representatives failed to elect a new president, despite holding three new rounds of ballots, due to continuing disagreements among Republicans.
And 20 Republicans insist they do not support Kevin McCarthy, ignoring former US President Donald Trump’s call for Republicans to support him.
And the Republican leader, McCarthy, has failed to muster the support needed to win office, in six rounds of elections in two days.
US President Joe Biden has said that the failure of Congress to carry out its duties is a shame for the country.
Trump wrote a message of support for McCarthy on the social media platform “Truth Social” on Wednesday, urging lawmakers to support him in his bid to succeed Democrat Nancy Pelosi as speaker.
But it seems that Trump’s pleas have not resonated and have not moved the position of rebel Republican lawmakers. Thus, McCarthy lost three more rounds of voting.
Ask for McCarthy’s withdrawal
Rep. Lauren Boebert, a Republican, said Trump spoke to her and other lawmakers to “tell us to end this.”
Lauren stressed that Trump, instead of asking for McCarthy’s support, should call him and tell him “it’s time to step back.”
Trump made his call Wednesday morning after the House of Representatives failed to elect a new speaker in its inaugural session for the first time in 100 years.
“Don’t turn a big win into a colossal loss,” she said on her social media platform. “Time to celebrate, you deserve it! Kevin McCarthy will do right.”
McCarthy has represented California in the House of Representatives since 2007. He was the House Minority Leader after Republicans lost control of him in the 2018 midterm elections.
The Council meeting was expected to be different, as the Republican Party won control of it by a simple majority following the US midterm elections last November.
But McCarthy faced an uprising from members of his own party, and a number of Republicans refused to support him.
The relationship between Trump, who announced his intention to run for president again in 2024, and McCarthy over the past four years has been mostly cordial.
Though McCarthy criticized the former president in the aftermath of the Capitol riot, the two quickly reconciled over GOP leaders’ refusal to support the House investigation into the January 6 events.
