German automaker BMW Group sold about 2.4 million cars last year, about 100,000 fewer than a year earlier. An increasing number of new BMWs are electric.
Electric cars now account for nearly 10 percent of total sales at BMW, which produces Minis and Rolls-Royces in addition to the BMW marque. The target for 2023 is further growth to 15%, the producer announced on Wednesday.
The cause of the decline in sales is that BMW struggled in 2022 with chip shortages, lockdowns due to the corona virus and high inflation in Europe.
The German group is pleased that BMW remains the best-selling brand in the luxury segment, ahead of rival Mercedes-Benz.
In 2022, the Dutch also bought 3.2% fewer cars from BMW and other brands. According to official data from BOVAG, the RAI Association and the RDC, we have all bought 312,000 new passenger cars, compared to almost 323,000 cars in 2021.
