South Korea fines Tesla 2.1 million euros for false advertising

South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) on Tuesday fined US electric car maker Tesla Motors 2.85 billion won (€2.1 million) for misleading electric car advertisements.

The KFTC says the company’s South Korean website has exaggerated and misrepresented the range and charging speed of electric cars.

The Commission reports that the driving distance of “Tesla” electric cars decreases by up to 50.5% in cold weather compared to what is claimed in the advertisements.

The automaker also failed to inform South Korean consumers that the speed at which cars charge is significantly dependent on the charger used, the outside temperature and the condition of the battery.

Tesla also misrepresented consumer savings because the company failed to explain that charging costs for electric cars are affected by various factors, including charging speed and government support.
