(Los Angeles) Golf world number five Jon Rahm said Tuesday he expects to see new PGA Tour players migrate to LIV Golf in 2023.
“There will be other players who choose to make the move to LIV, that’s what I think,” the Spaniard said in Hawaii, ahead of the Kapalua Tournament of Champions which kicks off on Thursday.
According to the 2021 US Open winner, the high prizes promised by the Saudi-funded LIV will attract new golfers, despite the efforts of the PGA Tour.
Efforts Lauded by Jon Rahm. “They are making the necessary changes to adapt to this new era and I think it’s better for everyone.”
The PGA has notably seen the departure of talents such as the Australian Cam Smith this summer, winner of the last Open in the United Kingdom, but also the star Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson or Sergio Garcia.
The prizes awarded in some tournaments have been increased accordingly, to avoid an exodus.
Last month, the Augusta Masters organization said entry rules would not change in 2023 and players from the LIV circuit would be allowed to participate.
These will compete with Tiger Woods, unwavering PGA icon.
Augusta golf club president Fred Ridley deemed this split unfortunate, without directly targeting the LIV.
Ahead of the Ryder Cup scheduled for September, Jon Rahm has called on the PGA and European circuits to reach an agreement to avoid any cheating involving LIV participants.
